Buying Local Food Supports Diversity

One advantage of local food is that it supports diversity in its various forms. Diversity is an important part of a food system. From the background of farmers (age, race, gender), to the mix of crops in the ground that help heal the soil, diversity allows for a much more vibrant food system. When we talk about nutrition, it is not only what feeds the body but also what feeds the soul. Most people have a fond memory that revolves around food. Usually, those dishes become our comfort foods. If you’re not from an Appalachian background, it can be difficult to recreate those dishes, as access to culturally relevant produce grown locally can be nonexistent. But this is where cooking can be a creative process.

When you “Eat Fresh, Buy Local” you support diversity that creates a stronger, healthier community.

How can you reimagine your local produce, such as potatoes, greens, etc., as a substitute in one of your favorite dishes? Trying different varieties of produce also allows emerging specialty crop farmers to have a market and the consumer to have more choices for a great meal.

For those who aren’t much of a cook, could you possibly diversify the local restaurants you dine at? Maybe include more BIPOC-owned and committing to dining there once a month? Could you possibly build a relationship with the owner of your favorite local restaurant or town grocery and advocate that they support local farmers if they don’t already? Building community can empower us as stakeholders in our local food system while building resilience. Building a community this way allows diversity to thrive, and everyone can nourish their bodies and souls.
