The one day Fast for Peace and Food Justice brought together 200 people to the Dayton International Peace Museum for inspiration, education and community unity. Ambassador Tony Hall kicked off the fast Friday evening along with a discussion on topics including blood diamonds, the war in Ukraine and the importance of contacting your elected officials to voice your concerns. HHI Board President Darius Beckham moderated the discussion.

Michael Carter shared information about the book chosen for the Peace Museum’s community reading project. The Barn by Wright Thompson is a powerful story about the murder of Emmet Till and the impact that is still felt today.

Also, Dion Green received the Miami Valley Peace Maker award for his work with victims of violence. His father, Derrick Fudge, was murdered in the 2019 Oregon mass shooting. Dion turned his pain into strength by authoring the book “Untitled: Act of God. Act of Man” and founding The FUDGE Foundation to help individuals who are impacted by mass shootings, human trafficking, domestic abuse and other forms of trauma.

While the weekend dealt with serious issues of hunger, violence and justice, music and dance from The World House Choir, Dayton Jazz Ensemble and Olohana’s Polynesian Dance brought a wonderful positive energy to the weekend. Their performance reminds us that the daunting struggle for justice and human rights also includes joy and light.

Ambassador Hall encouraged everyone to reflect on their role in the work for peace and food justice. If we all “do the thing in front of us,” we can make the Miami Valley a community of peace and food justice.

We want to thank all those who make this inspirational weekend possible. We especially want to thank our sponsor and partner one.two.five Benefit Corporation.  Their work supporting small farmers and climate-smart agriculture is a vital part of building a just and sustainable food system.
